Crafting is the art of creating things from just about anything that isn't cold, rigid metal, though it is also done with soft, 'decorative' metals. The primary use of Crafting though is the use of magical Gems and the creation of equipment made from cloth, wood, or leather, for those who don't like the feel of steel on their skin for whatever reason. Certain weapons can also be made, such as bows and whips. If you want to make a wooden sword be my guest, but it's probably not going to be very good... There are of course exceptions.
Here are the various jobs one can attempt with Crafting skill. Be aware that Intent is -very- important in any job such as this. Declare what you -want- it to do when you create it.
Be aware that in -all- cases, a gem must be Unlocked to do anything but sparkle. Cutting and Refining are optional.
All of these operations require Artisan Tools. Specs and 'specific' tools are no longer required, but may improve success rate.
Create Bauble
Creates whatever trinket you like, from necklaces to anklets. If made solely from a gem, a gem and one peice of other material, they will be considered Accessories. Any more than that and they will occupy some other, less versatile slot. Accessories made -only- with Gems won't even have a weight, but will generally be less effective.
Inset Gem
Places a gem in a previously existing peice of equipment. Any given peice can only handle so many different gems, and different element gems may synchronize into a third element rather than simply stacking their effects.
Cut Gem
Cut a gem in the proper way to make it sparkle. Adds the 'Cut' tag to a gem, enhancing its final effect.
Refine Gem
Refines a gem to a more pure, potent state. This can -only- be done once per gem, pass or fail. Refining a Cut gem will undo the Cutting. Adds the Refined tag to a gem, increasing its effective level.
Tailoring, Leatherwork
This is used to create garnments from cloth or leather. Such things are armor for all intents and purposes, and such armor is generally much lighter than regular.
1 Unit worth of Metal or 2 Units worth of Wood 'plates' can be attached without it losing its weight advantage, though it will add to it. If a garnment uses both cloth and leather, the 'majority' materials bonus applies. If they are in equal amounts, Leather takes precedence. These plates must be created seperately and then attached to the finished armor after it is created (declare that the garnment is meant to bear plates later when you make it)
Garnments can be 'stacked' with "real" armor following rules detailed elsewhere unless said garnment is plated with metal or wood.
Weaponmaking
Weapons can be made with Crafting, but only from applicable materials. It is generally only efficient in the making of certain weapons, detailed below;
Bows: Bows are generally made from a certain amount of wood and a string of some sort. Unlike with most weapons, a larger bow will not necessarily be more damaging. It will instead have only enhanced range.
A 'Composite' bow can be made using different materials with a higher skill check. Such bows ignore the usual Fragile trait resulting from such things. Composite bows containing metal, however, lose the 'lightness' bonus wood provides.
The same applies if you make a slingshot for some reason.
Crossbow - Like Bows in every way, but they require a simple Machinery check to create. The practical differences between the two weapons are outlined elsewhere.
Arrows: Arrows are generally, but not always, created from a wood shaft with a metal or stone tip. One Unit of wood and/or metal will yield several arrows in one attempt, with more being made depending on the Level of the material (which doesn't affect the damage).
While weapons made from composite materials are generally 'Fragile', arrows included, it doesn't matter for arrows because they're not 'generally' reused anyway.
Like bullets, trick arrows are perfectly doable. Feel free to experiment.
Whips: Whips can be made from leather. They are generally lighter than metal weapons, but require a specific proficiency to use correctly. As with armor, up to one Unit of metal or two units of wood can be added without removing the lightness bonus they get. Like with bows, a longer whip won't necessarily be more damaging, but will have greater range and versatility.
